Since the deregulation of the market in 1997, electricity companies which operate on Spanish soil have been prohibited from operating in other EU markets. However, since 2010 the EU has warned the government that this measure is incompatible with European regulations, closing the dossier in 2011 when they promised to have the law revoked.
The process has currently reached a grinding halt but it is expected to be reactivated in the coming months, judging from the latest amendments to the electricity market bill proposed by the ruling party.
